Inside an Adobe Commerce Black Friday War Room: The Metrics That Matter When Traffic Spikes
A merchant tells you:
“Our servers are only at 40% CPU, so everything looks healthy.”
Five minutes later, customers cannot complete checkout.
Both statements can be true.
Infrastructure Health Is Only One Layer
During peak traffic, teams need visibility across four layers.
Infrastructure
Monitor:
- CPU
- memory
- disk latency
- network
- database connections
- PHP workers
- cache hit rate
Application
Watch:
- response time
- PHP exceptions
- HTTP 5xx responses
- slow database queries
- search latency
- queue depth
- cron backlog
Third Parties
Your site may depend on:
payment → tax → address validation → fraud → search → ERP → shipping.
Measure response time and error rate separately for each one.
Business Transactions
This is where technology becomes commerce.
Track:
- sessions
- add-to-cart rate
- checkout starts
- successful orders
- payment decline/error rate
- order value
- orders per minute
If traffic rises while orders suddenly fall, infrastructure dashboards alone may not explain why.
Cache Hit Ratio Can Determine Whether the Database Survives
A CDN or full-page cache should absorb large amounts of anonymous traffic.
Unexpected cache misses can push requests toward PHP and the database until apparently healthy infrastructure begins cascading into failure.
Monitor cache behavior before and during campaigns.
Queues Need Age, Not Just Count
“5,000 messages in queue” provides limited information.
If processing throughput is high, that may be acceptable.
A better metric is:
How old is the oldest unprocessed message?
Age reveals whether the system is recovering or falling behind.
Have a Degradation Strategy
Before peak traffic, decide what you can temporarily disable.
For example:
- noncritical recommendations
- expensive personalization
- secondary analytics
- synchronous downstream calls
Protect checkout and order creation first.
Zynovo Perspective
Peak-season engineering is ultimately an exercise in protecting the customer transaction.
The most useful dashboard is not the one with the most graphs.
It is the one that answers:
“Can customers still buy, and are those orders flowing through the business?”
Zynovo helps Adobe Commerce merchants perform load testing, performance diagnostics and peak-season architecture reviews before high-volume events.
